Measurements of open-water arctic ocean noise directionality and transport velocity

چکیده

Measurements from bottom-mounted acoustic vector sensors, deployed seasonally between 2008 and 2014 on the shallow Beaufort Sea shelf along Alaskan North Slope, are used to estimate ambient sound pressure power spectral density, transport velocity of energy, dominant azimuth 25 450 Hz. Even during ice-free conditions, this region has unusual features when compared against other U.S. coastal regions. Two distinct regimes exist in diffuse noise environment: one with high density levels but low directionality, another lower directionality. The transition two states, which is invisible traditional spectrograms, occurs 73 79 dB re 1 ?Pa2/Hz at 100 Hz, occurring higher frequencies. Across a wide bandwidth, high-directionality consistently arrives geographical azimuths 0° 30° true north over multiple years locations, seasonal interquartile range 40° frequencies velocities. long-term stability directional regime, believed arise dominance wind-driven sources an east–west coastline, makes it important feature arctic sound.

Water Velocity Measurements in Open Channels Using Volumetric Current Meter (VCM)

An innovative Volumetric Current Meter (VCM) was designed in order to allow quick velocity measurements in open channels. At first, the coefficient of velocity (Cv) of the device was determined through calibration under different water velocities in the laboratory. The measurement performance was verified by measurements performed in similar flows in irrigation channels using an ordinary curren...

Deep-water measurements of container ship radiated noise signatures and directionality.

Underwater radiated noise from merchant ships was measured opportunistically from multiple spatial aspects to estimate signature source levels and directionality. Transiting ships were tracked via the Automatic Identification System in a shipping lane while acoustic pressure was measured at the ships' keel and beam aspects. Port and starboard beam aspects were 15°, 30°, and 45° in compliance wi...

Arctic pathways of Pacific Water: Arctic Ocean Model Intercomparison experiments

Pacific Water (PW) enters the Arctic Ocean through Bering Strait and brings in heat, fresh water, and nutrients from the northern Bering Sea. The circulation of PW in the central Arctic Ocean is only partially understood due to the lack of observations. In this paper, pathways of PW are investigated using simulations with six state-of-the art regional and global Ocean General Circulation Models...

Title : Sea Spray and Icing in the Emerging Open Water of the Arctic Ocean

With the sea ice cover in the Arctic Ocean declining, the more extensive areas of open water will foster more frequent storms, higher winds, and bigger waves. These conditions can create copious amounts of sea spray. We anticipate that structures placed in shallow water—wind turbines, drilling rigs, or man-made production islands, for instance—will, therefore, experience more episodes of freezi...
